The song by Marcus Machado is a journey into the heart of Black America and an attempt at entering the psyche of White America. After 4 years of openly blatant racist actions during the Trump Administration, what has always existed has become much more prominent and visible. The cell phone has become a device of documentation and in the process the new generation of young White America is fighting to reconcile the treatment of Black people and other groups of non-White people in this country. At the same time groups of young and old White people are clinging to a hope of returning to White privilege that allows for White America to continue getting away with the murder of innocent Black Americans.
The entire album is beautiful, but after the justice found in the murder of George Floyd, this song hit much harder. What if we could trade places? What if we could shape shift? Check out this cut from the album Aquarius Purple.
