Darryl Carter: Creating Legacy Project – Part 1

top ranking lists

Darryl Carter was a songwriter who wrote records for Ann Peebles, Jonny Lang, Otis Clay, Bobby Womack and produced what could be considered one of the first rap albums by John Kasandra (Color Me Human). Darryl was my father, but he didn’t raise me. I held animosity towards him for far too long. While we interacted and talked over the years and I finally started getting over my anger, he died in 2017. Because his finances were in disarray, I wasn’t with him. I realize I wasted too much time being angry and upset.

I decided to begin documenting his work and uncover his story. He has an amazing catalog of music and I think it’s important to build his legacy. This is Part 1. I visited the Memphis Listening Lab to air the documentary on Bobby Womack. It was a good experience to begin sharing his story. I will use this initial step to connect with the Stax Museum in Memphis and hopefully land his plaques in the museum where his legacy will live alongside of greats like Isaac Hayes and the Staple Singers.
