In this episode I share a part of our summer routine. Every year my daughter and I set up a week long art camp. When I was young, my mom didn’t have time to nurture my artistic skills. She was working too hard and my father wasn’t in the picture. My wife noticed my daughter’s talent and has developed it in sketching, clay creations and via photography.
This year for art camp we focused on photography and interior design. I also so an opportunity to possibly build out an art show for my daughter as well as get work for my potential art gallery; if the camp went according to plan.
The first day of our father/daughter art camp we took the Nikon D3100 to Downtown Memphis on the river. The azules had placed mobile hoops on a painted blacktop. We’ve had two festivals in May so the hoops have been moved, but the courts are still there.

I didn’t want to carry around a ton of shoes that we couldn’t watch while shooting. I gave the shoes and camera to my daughter and let her figure out how to stage her shots.
We edited the photos and sent them a canvas print ship. It was expensive, but the lesson served several purposes. It taught her how to name her exhibit (which is called WORN), it taught her to make art from things that appear to no longer have value, and it taught her that if you can create it could potentially turn into a revenue stream if someone values the work. My daughter is 11 and she has framed sketches of her work on our walls and now she has a series of ten photos (more on the way after these 4) that can be either displayed or turned into posters and sold.
