The fractured nature of track and field can be compared to a bell cast in bronze which has been cracked. The integrity of the bell is diminished. When struck it doesn’t ring as loud or clearly. It’s still heavy and can be seen as significant when looking on the bell from a distance, but with a closer inspection the fracture is all that is seen.

Olympic Hangover should inspire a more rabid need to see the amazing athletics athletes, but when there isn’t a Noah Lyles to bring about the conflicted viewership, the energy isn’t quite as high. Since Sydney McLaughlin Levrone doesn’t like the travel schedule for competition in Europe, her lack of participation keeps her out of the main events and this lends itself to the problematic aspect of growing the sport.

Outside of the NCAAs, Worlds and Trials, the United States lacks a league which would grow the sport. The Grand Slam Track League is looking to remedy this in 2025, but it’s limited in scope although the event has landed Syndey, Kung Fu Kenny and Kerley. What is to be seen is how the legacy of the Diamond League will be shaped by this new entrant into the competitive landscape.

That’s a discussion for the future. Right now, for the next two days, the Diamond League’s pinnacle will be showcased for two days and to catch Sydney (running in an invitational section of the event) she’s in the 400m on the 13th and the 200m on the 14th. In women’s high jump on the 13th the triumvirate of Patterson, Olyslager and record holder Mahuchikh will take flight. Men’s high jump will see the return of silver medalist Shelby McEwen who will pushed by newcomer Romaine Beckford who has been improving on each stop since the Olympics.

Sha’Carri will fight Gold Medalist Julien Alfred in the 100m on the 13th and she will take on the field in the 200m on the 14th. Track and field couldn’t be in a better position for the future with the upcoming ATHLOS NYC : Sept 26, 2024 – Speed Has A New Sound. Will you be watching the Diamond League finale?
