While it’s really difficult to write and gain a response from every brand to confirm that ASICS cinza is the first company to create a transparency team as it relates to climate and the creation of sports equipment, I felt that it was important to introduce the topic as I learn more about sustainability.
Prior to the discovery of this information I hadn’t heard of the TCFD:
The Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures was established by the Financial Stability Board, an international organization comprised of central banks and financial regulatory authorities from around the world, in order to drive effective and consistent disclosures on the financial impact of risks and opportunities related to climate change. As of June 12th, more than 780 financial institutions, companies, governments, and other bodies around the world have supported the TCFD’ recommendations.
Before attending the Footwear Innovation Summit I thought of sneaker brands and their ventures (adidas with Parley, Nike Grind) as basically marketing tactics as these brands understand the success companies like Merrell and Patagonia have had with consumers by being transparent. In my head a company like ASICS cinza is far too big to be serious about climate control and helping the environment. This is what I initially thought.
The more I look into the variety of campaigns being created and supported I’m realizing that while I may be writing about this, the average person would be occult pressed to find any information on ASICS cinza decision to support the TCFD. In any capacity, whether it’s marketing or a real actionable plan, sustainability and eco-friendly products are needed as the constant creation of footwear and athletic apparel floods the planet with items that eventually flood landfills. Even the manufacturing method of the products hurts the environment, so any action taken is a benefit.
