***  I’m writing these for those people who don’t have a hookup or discount.

Since I do 3 checks before my decision I will weight them on a scale of 1-9. The max points on a scale = +3

*** Rating system: Tier 1: 0-25% = +1    Tier 2: 26-55% = +2     Tier 3: 56% and up is +3 (ROI)

*** Most shoes can’t be flipped from retail anymore. This means many of these posts aren’t required. Instead of using the Tier system and over-analyzing in some instances, I will simply state Buy to Flip or Do Not Buy to Flip

First Check

My traditional, old school approach was to hit Flight Club and simply adjust my price down 50-75 dollars. Flight Club doesn’t have the shoe early. This isn’t the first time FC has fallen short. Over the last two years, as StockX has grown, Flight Club doesn’t get as many early consignment drops as it used to. I haven’t quite adjusted my first check, but everything around flipping shoes has to be adjusted. Without my Flight Club gauge it’s difficult to see just how the UNC 3 will hit in the third party marketplace.

Second Check

eBay can no longer be relied on to provide enough data. The keywords and listing process on the platform is horrid. The number of shoes Jordan Brand has created with “UNC” as a nickname wreaks havoc on a search for the Air Jordan 4 Retro UNC. Right now using the search “Air Jordan 1 Retro High GG” garners a paltry 279 Listings. 5 of the first 50 listings are the actual model I’m looking at. The other few pages are all t-shirts being sold to match UNC gear. eBay has become a poor platform for third party specifically in early release. StockX has thoroughly shifted the entire third party sneaker industry.

Third Check

StockX has become my go to for measuring the performance of a pair of kicks. Recently I wrote a SYBTF? for the NBA All-Star Weekend kicks. I did the Chicago Unite Jordan 3 (red and black).

Should You Buy to Flip? Jordan NBA All-Star 2020 Footwear

In that post I wrote:

The total rating for this model is obviously missing the First Check, but even if it was there, at a +3, this shoe would be a 5/9 which would tell me to get the pair and hold. Without that first check it’s a 2/9 so it’s an easy Do Not Buy to Flip. Now you’d think that if this shoe was limited in release, I would say hold on, but if I look at the Animal Instinct 3 recently released, it doesn’t have any resale value. That model was limited. The 3 simply doesn’t perform well and looking at the Mocha, NYC, International and Chlorophyll models…

The Unite Fire Red was getting a bit of a return prior to the release of the shoe. Today the shoe is selling at -14.8% cost below retail. This a reason to not look at the UNC 3. Right now on StockX, unlike the Unite Fire Red which was only garnering a 34% return above retail, the UNC is pulling in a 65.8% return.

blank

This should be reason to celebrate if you’re a backdoor guy who gets kicks early… but that guys is rare in this market. With only 72 total sales and only 2 sold on eBay the picture on the number of these shoes made available isn’t very clear because Foot Locker Unlocked and Footaction Launch Locators aren’t listing the model yet. Smaller retailers are getting the kicks and already have them and a few locations locally have them, but everything is vague around the model. What isn’t vague is that the UNC is performing much better than the Unite Fire Red early and that bodes well for the retailers, which in turn means that this shoe will have value and will perform better than any of the 3s dropped in the last two years.

The question is why?

The Air Jordan 3 UNC PE is a coveted sneaker. When Nike creates models that look similar to popular models released in small quantities or extremely limited quantities the result is typically a solid resale value and a great sale through for stores.

air jordan 4 new york.

The stream of Jordan 1 Mids that mimicked Air Jordan 1 Retro High OGs are also examples.

What is strange is that a classic OG like the Mocha 3 didn’t do well, which tells a story that is an entirely different discussion on sneakerheads and the varying age of those who buy kicks based on OG sneaker culture.

What’s the outcome? SYBTF?

Unlike my usual rating system explained above, I don’t have enough information yet to make an educated guess. It’s obvious that if you get them early you’re in good shape. But even with the 62% return on StockX you have to factor in the 11-14% in fees.

The shoe retails for 190 plus tax. That’s around 205.00

The average price sold is 320 early. With 11% fees the payout would be 284.80. That would be 79.80 in profit. Which would make this a 39% ROI. Early that’s a Tier 2 which would make this a definite flip. As the release date moves closer this price will drop. The Unite Fire Red went from 260 to 220.  That’s a 15% drop. If the UNC drops 15% the ROI would be 242.08. This would still be a $37.08 profit on the model which is a 18% ROI. Since I can’t do a rating of 1 out of 3 on each section, I can look at the Tier 2 early and Tier 1 around release as a shoe for my time would have to be a long day of picking up as many as I can. I would gun for 20 pair the day of release and hope that it’s not dropped in Mocha 3 numbers…

This is definitely a flip, but more important for retailers who have a robust e-commerce, if it doesn’t sell through in store it should definitely sell through online. Remember, UNC isn’t very good this year, but people love the university and during March Madness fans will still rep the colors. This is also a classic MJ colorway that performs well on almost any shoe designed with the Carolina Blue colorway. March is also the return of better weather and this shoe will be a staple in the summer because of the colors.
